There are more ways to treat acne than you can count on both
hands. Every website says they have the answer and every product
states they are the only acne medication which is effective.
So objectively speaking, which acne medication really works?
One of the most common and known antibacterial substances
is benzoyl peroxide. And what is so wonderful for the consumer
is that it’s processed into creams, cleansers, scrubs
and exfoliates. Benzoyl peroxide is very effective against
minor to moderate acne outbreaks.
Antibiotics, whether in the form of a topical lotion or taken
orally, will almost always alleviate your acne and are a very
popular acne medication. Besides possibly dealing with side
effects, the problem is that once the antibiotics are stopped,
the acne usually returns. And any doctor or dermatologist
will tell you that you cannot continue on antibiotic medication
indefinitely because overuse of them causes them to be ineffective
on your body which can be dangerous to you in the future should
you need them. Among the most common antibiotics used are:
erythromycin, clindamycin and sulfacetamide.
Retinoids are another very common acne medication. This acne
treatment is very common and though it is effective, it’s
very important that it is applied to the skin on a regular
basis, preferable 7 times per week. Even though this is fairly
common treatment, it has been known to cause irritation. What
doctors recommend is that you use a small amount and then
build up to using a full dose of it on your skin. If the irritation
does not subside, then you will have to suspend its use.
Another fairly new acne medication for topical treatment
of this skin disorder is tretinoin. This specific substance
increases cell production in the hair follicle which aids
in healing. This medication also can cause some side effects
such as skin irritation and sun sensitivity.
Accutane is a fairly new treatment for acne. Mostly it is
used after the skin has not responded to antibiotics. Also,
the side effects from this drug are fairly serious. They include:
blistering of the skin, loss of hair, severe headache and
nausea and vomiting. As with any medication, if you are exhibiting
these side effects then you should stop taking it immediately.
Other new options are zenmed and
acneticin. Acneticin attacks the
acne from the root. This is a new oral treatment that is becoming
very popular. The data seems to be promising. Zenmed data
also looks very good.
As with any acne medication, you must be comfortable with
using it, understanding its side effects and how effective
it is supposed to be. If you have any questions regarding
a specific medicine you’ve been given, ask your doctor.
There is always proactiv
acne medicine if you dont feel comfortable with the above
options.
