It’s very obvious that those that suffer with moderate
or severe acne wish they didn’t have to try to manage
skin eruptions and flare-ups, many times on a daily basis.
And it’s very obvious that your acne problem is affecting
what makeup you use, soap you wash with and creams and ointments
that you spend a lot of money purchasing. But what isn’t
so obvious is what is beneath the surface of your acne problems
and I’m not talking about bacteria.
Acne or acne vulgaris, creates
scars in a lot more ways than the eye can see. If you want
to weigh one against the other, the physical disturbance of
your problems with acne is not anywhere near how it is probably
affecting you emotionally. This is especially true for teens
and young adults.
Over 85% of those that suffer from severe acne are teen boys
and girls. During a time when hormones are shooting, confidence
is waning and wanting to prove you’re ‘growing
up’, acne comes on the scene and creates even greater
obstacles that you’re already dealing with. This life
stage is a very critical time. Having an acne problem only
exacerbates the lack of confidence which probably already
exists.
Young people and even adults who experience severe acne tend
to withdraw into themselves. They try to blend into the background
subconsciously feeling that if they don’t speak, they
won’t be seen and their acne will not be noticed. Unfortunately,
even when the acne problem is under control, this tendency
to abstain from even the smallest communication with others,
remains.
As an adult with a severe adult
acne problem, most of what you rely on when seeking employment,
is a good personality. It’s been found that even in
this case, coming out of yourself proves to be almost impossible.
Many people tend to believe that if you have blemishes, that
you are dirty or have poor hygiene. Actually nothing is further
from the truth. Usually those that suffer from an acne problem
take better care of their skin than people who do not have
acne.
And society does not help this problem. You could be the
most gorgeous model, but if you have acne, you will not be
hired for the job. As an actor, the same applies. Flight attendants
and some upscale restaurants will not even allow employees
to work with the public if any blemishes have erupted on their
face. The feeling of rejection in all of these cases is totally
normal.
If you are suffering from a severe acne problem or if you
have a loved one or friend who is, be very aware of what they
are dealing with on the inside as well as the outside. We
have to reassure them that this is just temporary and there
are answers with and without medical help. They need to be
affirmed in whom they are aside from their acne problem and
that they will get through this.
